Composition roofs, also known as asphalt shingles, are covered with granules that serve several critical functions such as UV protection, aesthetic appeal, and fire resistance. Over time, these granules can start to wear away, a process known as granule loss.

The timeline for when a composition roof starts losing its granules can vary based on several factors:

1. Age: As the roof ages, the adhesive that holds the granules in place may weaken, leading to granule loss. It’s natural for older shingles to experience some level of granule loss.Harsh weather conditions, such as heavy rain, hail, or strong winds, can dislodge granules from the shingles12.

2. Poor-Quality Shingles: Low-quality or poorly manufactured shingles may experience granule loss more quickly than high-quality shingles1.
